YouTube TV is losing Monday Night Football and other key Disney properties. Because the move happened so quickly, YouTube TV members who have the full sports packages will have to find another place to watch Monday's divisional matchup between the Bears and the Vikings.
YouTube TV and ESPN and Disney’s channels controversy.
"All Disney-owned channels, including ESPN and your local ABC station, are unavailable on YouTube TV as of December 17, 2021, end of day Eastern Time," states a post on YouTube TV's website. Even cloud-based recordings are being phased out of YouTube TV.
ESPN, ABC, Disney, National Geographic, FX, and more networks are included. It's a little snafu for Alphabet , which owns YouTube TV. Subscription prices are reducing by $15 per month, or $180 per year. YouTubeTV has a subscriber base of around 4 million people. This equates to $720 million in revenue every year.
Of course, the content may not be removed from the platform permanently. And the inverse of that equation is likely to work as well. From a viewing platform, Disney (DIS) is losing money.
The expected revenue for 2022 for Alphabet is now about $245 billion. Disney's expected fiscal year 2022 sales predictions are around $84 billion on average.
In comparison to the size of either organization, the impact appears to be little. While the feud is unlikely to have a significant influence on either stock, it does demonstrate how content delivery and viewing have evolved.
YouTube TV, like cable companies, has been aggregating and providing programming. Users on YouTube, of course, upload and view billions of hours of video every day. In addition, Disney now has its own streaming services, including Hulu, ESPN+, and, of course, Disney+.
